Vice President of Engineering

Overview: Seeking an ambitious, enthusiastic and self-motivated VP of Engineering with an interest in food + tech, and a desire to create a next generation conversational AI platform.

The VP makes all executive decisions with regards to the technological interests of the company. They are responsible for outlining the company’s technological vision, implementing technology strategies, and ensuring that the technological resources are aligned with the company’s busines needs. The VP should be a strategic thinker, an effective communicator and an expert in technological development.

Reporting: VP of Engineering will work directly for the CEO and will act as both a technology and business expert, making decisions that will impact the current and future operations of the company.

Responsibilities:

  • Product Management: the VP will work directly with the CEO on setting priorities, creating and updating roadmaps, grooming the backlog and developing detailed specifications for engineering to execute against. This includes creating detailed specifications in cooperation with stakeholders and external UI/UX resources when necessary.
  • Process Keeper: the VP is responsible for the definition and execution of engineering process. This includes hosting daily standups, demo day, sprint management, code review and retrospectives. Our Employer currently uses Agile Scrum on weekly cycles. The VP is responsible for clearing roadblocks and obtaining any outside resources needed to complete the sprint’s tasks. The VP is responsible for systems that support continuous delivery and quality assurance of Our Employer’s systems.
  • Customer Support/System Reliability: the VP is responsible for handling system outages and vetting bug reports. The VP will triage incoming issues, determine possible cause and assign to the appropriate team member(s). In some cases, the VP must work directly with customers when the issue is high profile or requires additional information. The VP works to ensure that system outages are addressed in a way that the same issue is not likely to recur.
  • Management: The VP is responsible for hiring, firing and development of all engineering staff. The VP must create the appropriate structures for advancement and retention of high performing engineers. The VP is responsible for creating and managing budgets.
  • Architecture: The VP is responsible for ensuring the system is architected to scale gracefully, is designed for failure (fault tolerant) and can be easily expanded and extended to meet the company’s future needs.
  • Company Representative: The VP is responsible for representing the company in a professional and diligent way with 3rd party service providers, integration partners and contraVPrs. This may include negotiations and meetings with these partners in order to facilitate the resources It requires to efficiently operate and expand.

 Skills:

  • Setting a vision for how technology will be used in the company
  • Ensuring that the technological resources meet the company’s short and long-term needs
  • Maintaining a consumer-focused outlook and aiding in the delivering of projects to market
  • Staying on top of technology trends and developments
  • Ensuring all technology practices adhere to regulatory standards
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience managing multiple teams in multiple locations
  • Experience managing employees and contraVPrs
  • Able to diplomatically work with constituents: CEO, sales, customers and investors
  • Experience managing engineers and data scientists with varied experience and skill levels
  • Ability to manage employee growth and development
  • Background in restaurant and hospitality technology is preferred
  • Able to manage budgets and timeframes

Requirements:

  • Technical stack: Ruby on Rails, Postgres, MongoDB, React, Python, OAuth, REST, javascript, AWS, Objective C, Swift (iOS native app) and Java (Android native app)
  • Experience managing and building systems that leverage data science, artificial intelligence, no-SQL database systems, extensive reliance on 3rd party APIs and multi-platform architectures (iOS, Android, web and mobile web)
  • Experience managing data center operations (AWS a plus)
  • Experience building and architecting large systems efficiently to scale
  • Experience working with and leveraging 3rd party services: telecommunications (Twilio) and payments (Stripe, ApplePay)
  • Experience in structured development processes. Agile Scrum is preferred
