Manager, Technical Accounting

Successful $19 Billion publicly traded (multi-national) firm west of Boston, MA is seeking to hire a Manager of Technical Accounting to join their growing team. This role can be located in the greater Boston area and/or Brooklyn, NYC.

Position Summary:

The Manager, Technical Accounting Research and Complex Accounting is responsible for managing the review, evaluation and implementation of external accounting standards (i.e., US GAAP, IFRS and regulatory principles).

Leads the research and documentation of technical accounting, complex transactions. Responsible for overseeing technical accounting changes and quarterly accounting relating to certain complex accounting areas, such as pension, environmental and derivative accounting. Manager is also responsible for the execution of periodical controls of the controls environment and manages the relationship with the external auditor on technical accounting topics as needed. Manages a team of five to seven (5-7) people. This position reports to the Director,

Complex Accounting.

Responsibilities

Partner with our corporate accounting team on the accounting close process, including reviewing account reconciliations and preparing reporting packages Research accounting literature and apply technical standards to complex business issues and transactions, including revenue recognition, business combinations, impairment valuations, inventory, tax, stock-based compensation

• Evaluation and implementation of new accounting standards and research of accounting conclusions

• Works closely with the Technical Accounting team and derivatives accounting team to support ongoing accounting analysis of significant or unusual transactions.

• Researches and monitors activities of all accounting standards and reporting practices to provide proactive revisions to policies and standards and ensures successful implementation by US Finance.

• Partners with subject matter experts in Finance Operations to implement, set policy and provide guidance on new US GAAP and IFRS standards.

• Applies technical standards and analysis to complex accounting practices and transactions.

• Leads the development, evaluation and documentation of US Controllership accounting practices and activities.

• Responsible for monitoring and identifying issues as well as overseeing accounting change impacts.

• Leads the development of, and participates in, technical training to ensure compliance to policy standards.

• Supports the preparation and review of consolidated and subsidiary financial statements in compliance with

US GAAP and IFRS requirements.

Manages Quarterly review and reporting of Complex Accounting areas

• Leads all accounting activities that support pension, environmental and energy efficiency derivatives accounting.

• Oversees the complex accounting team (five to seven people).

• Provides counsel to employees, manages third-party consultants and contractors, and advises senior leaders as necessary.

• Provides perspectives and conclusions under US GAAP, IFRS and regulatory accounting principles on queries

and requests that may arise in a timely basis (e.g., auditor’s requests, requests from the business).

• Works directly with the business to lead technical accounting research, analysis and documentation on current

and proposed transactions and structures in relation to Complex Accounting areas.

• Has strong understanding and knowledge of US GAAP, IFRS, SOX and SEC requirements, particularly in regard to pension accounting (assumption setting, required disclosures, pension accounting for curtailments and settlements) and environmental accounting (appropriate environmental reserves to record, strong familiarity with discounted cash flow models)

• Clearly documents accounting impacts of related transactions and accounting issues and is the primary liaison to communicate conclusion with external auditors.

• Ensures accurate and timely recording and processing of Complex Accounting transactions to support budgeting and forecasting activities to drive performance.

• Evaluates, analyzes and reviews general ledger accounts ensuring accuracy and validity for close processes.

• Assists in the reviewing of net income, balance sheet variances against current and historical data.

• Supports reporting function with the submission of mandatory filings and ensuring compliance with internal controls, including reviewing financial statement footnote requirements.

Candidates should possess the following characteristics and qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree and CPA

• Master’s Degree preferred

• 5+ years in accounting with increasing responsibility

• Big Four public accounting experience preferred

• Technical accounting experience and close familiarity with applying US GAAP, IFRS, Sarbanes-Oxley and SEC regulations

• Solid understanding of utility industry accounting, or similar industry
